Over 1,200 French-speaking Jewish visitors came to Hebron on Wednesday for the annual Yom Hevron parade organized by the Israel is Forever organization. Participants waved Israeli flags and sang Hebrew songs as they marched past the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs in the ancient city.
Member of Knesset Nir Barkat and Minister of Sport and Culture Miri Regev spoke at the event as did Minister of Transportation Bezalel Smotrich who voiced his support for new building projects in the city. Yaakov Hagoel, vice-chairman of the World Zionist Organization praised the many Jews from France who made aliyah and chose to make the Jewish homeland their new home.
Jacques Kupfer, the head of Israel is Forever, noted this month will mark the 90th anniversary of the deadly Hebron massacre of 1929. He contrasted the event with the thriving Jewish community of today.
Representatives of the Israel Defense Force spoke as well.
The participants visited historic sites in the city such as the Avraham Avinu synagogue and Beit Hadassah. The day ended at the Shavei Hevron yeshiva located at the historic Beit Romano building. The event was co-sponsored by Shavei Hevron, the Betar Zionist Youth Movement and other groups.
