A joyful holiday with candle lighting ceremonies at the Tomb of Machpela.
Local residents gathered with soldiers and officers from the Israel Defense Force, Israel police, yeshiva students and guests for a series on candle lighting ceremonies held at the Tomb of Machpela in Hebron. The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah was celebrated in the city of the Matriarchs & Patriarchs with song and spirit.
Hebron was the site of a decisive battle during the rebellion of Judah Maccabee and the Hasmoneans against the invading Seleucid Empire.
Hebron’s role in the Maccabean Revolt is mentioned in the apocryphal Book of the Maccabees and in the works of the great historian Josephus. For more info click here.

Veteran Hebron pioneer Rabbi Eliezer Waldman of the Nir Yeshiva, Hebron Brigade commander Col. Itzik Cohen, the Shavei Hevron Yeshiva, veteran advocate and Hebron pioneer Elyakim HaEtzni, Lieutenant Colonel Mordechai Siboni and IDF central command and families, Chabad of Hebron, Rabbi Shalom Horwitz of Kiryat Arba, IDF Chief Superintendent Aviad Katafi, Police Superintendent Alon Magen, Mendy Ariel, local musician Eli Gilboa, Rabbi Hanoch Kahana and other guests.
Popular Israeli singer Kobi Peretz made a surprise guest appearance at a Hanukkah celebration for IDF soldiers stationed in Hebron. The Heron Visitors Center and Heritage Museum at Beit Hadassah had special family events and tours including screenings of the movie Touching Eternity.
