People of all backgrounds drawn to Cave of Machpela for its historical significance.
Sarit Hadad will be returning to Hebron for the annual Women’s Gathering. She is one of several Israeli pop stars to visit the City of the Patriarchs & Matriarchs during the High Holiday season.
A week and a half before Rosh Hashanna, Mosh Ben-Ari visited the Tomb of Machpela with his band before a concert. On Facebook he posted “A short tour of the Cave of the Patriarchs before the performance… Thank you to our soldiers who are guarding every corner here.”
Ben-Ari gained fame with the band Sheva, a band whose members were Israelis of both Jewish and Arab background. Their 1997 hit “Od Yavo Shalom Aleinu (Salaam) became ubiquitous and Ben-Ari went on to a successful solo career.
Members of the Revivo Project also stopped by Hebron before Rosh Hashanna. Founded in 2012, the gold-record selling group performs traditional songs and classics dubbed by the media “retro-Mizrahi music.” They performed in front of the Tomb of Machpela complex in a huge out-door concert for local youth. Elaborate designs in light were projected on the walls of the Machpela complex during the show.
Chilik Frank, a virtuoso hasidic klezmer clarinetist performed along with singer-songwriter and poet Avichai Paz Greenwald, at a special Slichot performance in Saturday night. The event was held in memory of terrorist victims Yitzhak and Talya Ames by surviving family members an annual tribute.
But the highlight will be Sarit Hadad, one of the best-known female performers in Israel’s history. Her pop-mizrachi style has been a hit since the mid 1990s. Entitled “The Closest to Mother” the event will take place during the Ten Days of Repentance in-between Rosh Hashanna and Yom Kippur. Also headlining will be Rabbinit Yemima Mizrachi, a popular motivational speaker. Hadad has starred at the event twice before with over 10,000 people in attendance.
The phenomenon of secular performers visiting Hebron is no longer a novelty. In 2017, Amir Benayoun and Rami Kleinstein performed a sold-out show for the 50th Hebron day anniversary concert.
Seen in some circles as a hotbed of Orthodox Jewish fundamentalism, the reality is that people of all walks of life view Hebron as a connection to spirituality. The towering Machpela complex attracts those curious in its historical and architectural significance regardless of level of observance.
