Beit HaHerut building purchased in Hebron

The Jewish community of Hebron and the Harhivi Makom Ohalech
organization announced the purchase of a building called Beit
HaHerut
on Thursday.

The acquisition is located along the road from the Cave of Machpela
(Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs) to the Avraham Avinu neighborhood and part of
efforts to buy old homes, renovate them and repopulate what once was the Jewish quarter
of the city.

Member of Knesset Orit
Strook
praised the purchase and noted it took place during the Three
Weeks mourning period leading up to Tisha B’Av. “Even in the days of mourning for the
destruction [of the Temple], we hear and also see times of redemption,” she
said.

Hagit Ofran of Settlement Watch, a project of Peace Now which is opposed to
Jews living in Judea and Samaria, condemned the purchase stating, “it doesn’t matter if
they bought the house or not, this is an illegal settlement.” She called upon Prime
Minister Yair Lapid and the Israeli government to forcibly evict the
residents.

Since 1997, Israelis have been restricted to only the Israeli neighborhoods
of Hebron, with 80% of the city being under the Palestinian Authority. The PA has ruled
it a crime punishable by death to sell property to Jews. Muhammad
Abu Shahala
, who helped facilitate the transaction of the Beit HaMachpela property was
sentenced to death in 2012. The new purchasers were banned from entering the building
until the Israeli Defense Ministry approved the purchase.

The Jewish community of Hebron sees the newly purchased Beit HaHerut
as one more step in the normalization of Hebron and the redemption of neighborhoods
lost after the 1929 riots and during Jordanian rule which lasted from 1948 –
1967.
