chief rabbis of Israel will take place at the Tomb of Machpela in Hebron. The Hall of
Isaac and Rebecca will be open, one of the 10 times a year it is accessible. Ashkenazic
Chief Rabbi David Lau and Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef will lead
services.

10:30pm – 11:30pm – Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, chief rabbi of Tzfat, will lead a music
slichot service with singer Rabbi Uriel Saeed.

11:30pm – Slichot sermons from chief rabbis and main prayer services.

Also attending will be Rabbi Hillel Horowitz, Eliyahu Libman, head of the Kiryat Arba
Community Council, Amitai Cohen, head of the Religious Council of the Tomb of Machpela,
and other local leaders. Thousands are expected.

The tradition of visiting Hebron during the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashana
and Yom Kippur was started by the venerated Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, who served as
Israel’s Sephardic chief rabbi from 1983 to 1993.

Slichot, or forgiveness, are special prayers recited before the High Holidays and during
the Ten Days of Repentance. Throughout the preceding month of Elul, thousands flocked to
the holy city as well.
