Hakafot Shniot Celebration Draws Thousands in Hebron

As people began to take down their succah for the end of the holiday
of Succot, the dancing continued in Hebron. Outside of Israel, a second day is added to
many holidays and thus Simchat Torah is a day later. However in Israel, many
congregations hold a “hakafot shniot,” a second round of singing and dancing with the
Torah scrolls.

In Hebron it has become traditional for Chabad of Hebron to host a
celebration at the Tomb of Machpela. This year, the hall of Isaac and Rebecca, the
largest in the Machpela complex, was open and popular Israeli singer Mendy Jerufi
performed at the gathering.

The celebration ended an exciting week of Succot in which over 40,000 people
visited the city of the Matriarchs & Patriarchs for the Succot Festival and the
musical hallel prayer service.

The High Holidays of Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur also brought out crowds
for both prayers and for the Women’s gathering featuring Sarit
Hadad.

Major Eitan Dana, Commander of the Judea Brigade spoke to Israel National
News about how the Israel Defense Forces coordinate the masses.

“The Succot holiday is the high point for us during the holidays of the month
of Tishrei, both in terms of the number of visitors in the area and in terms of the
complex security deployment by all the security bodies in the Judea Brigade district,”
Dana told INN.

“We are very pleased to see that the work and planning of many weeks are
reflected in the tens of thousands of visitors who choose to spend the holiday at
various sites in our area, especially the Tomb of the Patriarchs,” he
stated.

“We will continue to protect the tens of thousands of residents and
visitors in the area, to allow quality of life, to allow people to go out and travel, to
sleep at night in the succah in the yard of their homes without fear,” Dana
concluded.

The Jewish Community of Hebron would like to thank all those who worked to
ensure a successful holiday season including Hebron’s Events Director Ashi Horwitz, the
IDF, Israeli police, Chabad of Hebron, Hebron Hospitality, the Committee for the Cave of
Machpela, the Egged bus company who provided extra lines, the Knesset Ministry of
Religious Affairs, Radio Kol BeRama, all the local residents and the many visitors and
guests who show their love and support.
