Hebron mourns passing of philanthropist Sheldon Adelson

The Jewish community of Hebron and the Hebron Fund mourns the loss of
Jewish-American philanthropist Sheldon Adelson, a staunch supporter of Jewish causes in
Israel and the United States. Mr. Adelson was a supporter of Hebron and contributed to
the community over the years.

In 2018, he and his wife Dr. Miriam Adelson donated an ambulance to the Hebron – Kiryat
Arba community as part of a $1 million donation for the Yesha Council to provide Magen
David Adom services in Judea and Samaria with five new bullet-proof
ambulances.

It was just one of the numerous contributions the Adelsons made to philanthropic causes
in the United States and Israel over the years.

Dr. Adelson his wife of 32 years, said in an official announcement “Sheldon was the love
of my life. He was my partner in romance, philanthropy, political activism and
enterprise. He was my soulmate.” She added, ” Much has been written and said about how
Sheldon, the son of poor immigrants, rose to the pinnacle of business success on the
strength of grit and genius, inspiration and integrity. His was an all-American story of
entrepreneurship. He was an American patriot: a U.S. Army veteran who gave generously to
wounded warriors and, wherever he could, looked to the advancement of these great United
States. He was the proudest of Jews, who saw in the State of Israel not only the
realization of an historical promise to a unique and deserving people, but also a gift
from the Almighty to all of humanity.”

The 87-year-old businessman founded the computer trade show COMDEX in 1989 and went on
to found Las Vegas Sands Corp. The Sands website states, “in Las Vegas he is widely
credited for helping transform the city from a gaming-centric regional location into the
leading convention and exhibition city in the United States.”

Adelson has been honored with the Armed Forces Foundation’s Patriot Award, Hotel
Investment Conference’s Innovation Award, the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate
Citizenship and others.

Born in Boston to Jewish immigrants, his father was a taxi driver and his mother worked
at a knitting shop. His first job was at the age of 12 selling
newspapers.

Through the Adelson Family Foundation, they funded medical research. They also donated
to the Republican party led by US President Donald Trump, the Republican Jewish
Coalition, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, the Yad Vashem World Holocaust
Remembrance Center and other causes. Sheldon Adelson owned the Israel HaYom Hebrew
daily newspaper. The Miriam and Sheldon Adelson Clinic for Drug Abuse
Treatment and Research was founded in 2000.

Mr. Adelson’s passing comes less than a day after that of noted French-Israeli activist Jacques
Kupfer
, who served on the executive of the World Zionist Organization and the
Jewish Agency. Mr. Kupfer was a strong advocate for the Jewish community in Hebron and
organized the annual Yom Hevron event which brought thousands to the City of
Abraham.
