The annual memorial marking the anniversary of the Hebron
Massacre will take place September 4, 2019 at the Kiryat Arba Performing Arts Center.
This year, marking the 90th anniversary will feature Prime Minister Benyamin
Netanyahu, President Reuven Rivlin, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and other
elected officials. It will include with a memorial service at the ancient
cemetery of Hebron and a tour of the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs. Also
speaking will be 98-year-old survivor Avraham Kiryati who will share his
memories.

murdered in a terrorist attack.

Rabin visited Hebron including the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs in
1976 following the Yom Kippur riot in which Palestinian attackers ransacked the Tomb,
revered as the burial site of the Biblical Matriarchs and Patriarchs, and ripped up the
Torah scrolls.

On August 24, 2019, 67 civilians were tortured and killed by their neighbors
in Hebron. The survivors were deported from the city by the British. The riots were
instigated by Haj Amin Husseini, the mufti of Jerusalem in a bid to consolidate his
power over rival Arab leaders.

The city fell into economic despair after the expulsion. Two years later, survivors
returned to rebuild the Jewish community. This lasted for five years until the
Arab revolt of 1936 in which the British again evicted the Jewish
community.
Every year, The re-newed Jewish community of Hebron holds a memorial service
at the cemetery where many of the victims are buried.

exclusive interview with 98-year-old survivor Avraham Kiryati who stated, “Hebron
must be in part of Israel,” he said. “I have learned from the past to be prepared. We do
not have any choice but to remain strong.”
