Prime Minister Netanyahu was last
in Hebron in 1998
to visit the widow of Rabbi Shlomo Ra’anan, who was
murdered in a terrorist attack.

Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin
visited Hebron including the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs in
1976 following the Yom Kippur riot in which Palestinian attackers ransacked the Tomb,
revered as the burial site of the Biblical Matriarchs and Patriarchs, and ripped up the
Torah scrolls.

On August 24, 2019, 67 civilians were tortured and killed by their neighbors
in Hebron. The survivors were deported from the city by the British. The riots were
instigated by Haj Amin Husseini, the mufti of Jerusalem in a bid to consolidate his
power over rival Arab leaders.

The city fell into economic despair after the expulsion. Two years later, survivors
returned
to rebuild the Jewish community. This lasted for five years until the
Arab revolt of 1936 in which the British again evicted the Jewish
community.

Every year, The re-newed Jewish community of Hebron holds a memorial service
at the cemetery where many of the victims are buried.

Many news outlets have mentioned the 90th anniversary. The Jerusalem Post had an
exclusive interview with 98-year-old survivor Avraham Kiryati who stated, “Hebron
must be in part of Israel,” he said. “I have learned from the past to be prepared. We do
not have any choice but to remain strong.”
