CAVE OF MACHPELA

Of course the most recognizable site in the city is the Cave of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs (Tomb of Machpela). This towering Herodian edifice is of world spiritual and historical importance and a pilgrimage center for tens of thousands of visitors. It is the burial place of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, as described in the Bible and a must-see for all those who connect to the Torah tradition.

The Hall of Isaac and Rebecca will be open on two days during Chol HaMoed Pesach – Tuesday April 15, 2025 and Wednesday Wednesday April 16, 2025. This section of the complex is usually reserved for Muslim prayers but is open ten days a year as part of the rotation agreement. It is the largest section of the ancient site and includes the tombs of Isaac and Rebecca and the opening into the cave, known as the “Entrance to the Garden of Eden.” Breeze from the underground caverns can be felt coming up from the opening, making this a rare opportunity to connect to this unique place.

TOURS OF HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS

The Jewish Quarter in Hebron offers a fascinating journey through history, with the highlight being the restored Avraham Avinu synagogue. Dating back to 1540, it served the Sephardic Jewish community for generations until it was mostly demolished following the Hebron massacre. It was restored and today serves as an active synagogue.

Built in 1879, Beit Romano is now the home of the Shavei Hebron hesder yeshiva, and continues the tradition started there by the Rebbe Rashab, the 5th Lubavitcher Rebbe who sent his students to Hebron to establish a yeshiva there. The site also houses a reconstruction of the Beit Midrash of Rabbi Haim Hezekiah Medini who lived there in the early 1900s and completed his monumental Talmudic encyclopedia the author of the Sdei Hemed there.

The Touching Eternity museum at Beit Hadassah presents the story of Hebron throughout history in an experiential way. The museum includes fascinating interactive exhibits appropriate for the whole family and a 4D short film. There is a kosher cafeteria and gift shop.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES

The Tel Hevron archeological park has recently undergone renovations and offers a unique experience for visitors. One can see the Walls of the Giants and the ancient mikvahs, the largest discovered in the Land of Israel, as well as other fascinating archaeological discoveries from various eras.

At the Tomb of Yishai and Ruth, new gardens, sitting areas, and a Beit Midrash have been built and the ancient and unique olive trees will be accessible.

Children’s activities will include a new ropes course, a demonstration of ancient crafts, and a tourist mini-train that will travel between the city’s sites.

Visitors can visit the new Beit Gaon Yehuda house, purchased by the Harchivi Mekom Aholech organization, which overlooks the archeological park. It is named in memory of local resident Yehuda Yahalom who was recently killed in Operation Swords of Iron.

The recently discovered grave of Rabbi Yehuda Bibas, a mid-19th century Jewish leader who pioneered the return to the Land of Israel can now be visited. Lost for decades, the correct identity of his final resting place was verified last month. There will be guided tours of the ancient cemetery, the museum, and other sites.

MUSIC CONCERT

On Tuesday, April 15, 2025 the outdoor music concert will take place featuring popular singers Bini Landau, Haim Israel, ElaytZur and others. For details see here.
