New Mayor of Hebron Inaugurated

Interior Minister Aryeh Deri toured Hebron Sunday night and
participated in the inauguration of Hillel Horowitz as head of the Hebron municipality /
mayor.

Also attending was Member of Knesset Matan Kahana, who stated he was
impressed by the abundance of “layers of Jewish history from the period of Patriarchs
through the period of the two temples,” up until the modern era.

MK Kahana praised Horowitz and other local elected officials. On his Facebook page
he posted photos of the event along with a photo of himself as ten-year-old boy in 1982
at the Avraham Avinu synagogue in Hebron. The rebuilt synagogue had been demolished by
the Jordanians in the 1950s.

Horowitz’s inauguration came a day after 45,000 people  visited for Parshat Chayei
Sarah.

A long-time local community organizer, Horowitz served as a military rabbi in
the elite Givati unit and later was the director of the Council of Jewish
Cemeteries.

The Palestinian Authority side of Hebron has its own mayor and city council,
currently led by Tayseer Abu Sneineh. The Jewish community’s previous mayor,
Avraham Ben Yosef, retired after a long tenure. New elections were
held.
