PA Hebron Mayor Arrested

The mayor of the Palestinian Authority controlled side of Hebron was among those arrested in the recent Israel Defense Force raid on terrorists and their supporters in Hebron. Tayseer Abu Sneineh was taken into custody by Israel’s Shin Bet security agency after expressing support for Hamas and Islamic Jihad, Channel 12 reported.

He has served as mayor of the PA controlled side of Hebron, which comprised 80% of the city, since 2017. He used his terrorist notoriety in his election campaign, advertising his role in the 1980 ambush that killed six Israeli civilians.

The attack in front of Beit Hadassah on Friday night took the lives of Howie Glatt, Gershon Klein, Ya’akov Zimmerman, Hanan Krauthammer, Eli HaZe’ev, and Shmuel Mermelstein and wounded over a dozen others. Abu Sneineh and the other terrorists involved were arrested and convicted for the murders, but later released in the controversial Jibril deal in 1985 to free Israeli hostages.

Over the years, Abu Sneineh rose in the ranks of Fatah before winning the election.

Eyal Gelman, head of the Hebron city council on the Israeli side of the city, responded stating:

“The arrest of the terrorist Abu Sneineh proves again that it is the duty of the State of Israel to take back the reins and appoint itself in charge of the city as was before the Hebron Accords of 1997. The time has come to unite the city again under complete Israeli control.”

The Hebron Accords, which came on the heels of the Oslo Accords, resulted in 80% of the city falling under PA control and 20% under Israeli control.
