This Shabbat we have two words in this parsha that became the motto of the Jewish nation. When God offered us the Torah on Har Sinai the response of the Jewish nation was “Naase VeNishma” – We will do and then we will listen.
Normally a person reads the contract first, he consults a lawyer to see the conditions of the contract. But the Jewish nation was so excited and waiting for this great gift of the Torah, they right away responded with those words.
If you look in the Torah the verse “Naase VeNishma” is chapter 24 verse 7. A lot of time people think that there’s a Torah of Mount Sinai, where there’s great spiritual awakenings. God opens up the heavens and the Jewish nation hears His voice.
But this parsha is all about taking the Torah down to everyday life. How to deal with the employee. How to deal with the downtrodden of society. The orphan, the widow. How to watch your assets to make sure they don’t cause damage to others. How to take responsibility for each other, and to return lost objects. The Torah of Har Sinai is the Torah of 24/7.
We should be privileged to take that Torah which we received into our everyday life. We should be able to live a society with high ethics and be that great light unto all the nations of the world, to be privileged in the merit of saying Naase VeNishma that God should bring us down all the great gifts and the Jewish nation should go higher and higher in their revelation and connection to Hashem and the Torah should expand to every part of our life.
